Leprosy: General Information and Remedies

Information and Remedies for Leprosy  

                     I.            Leprosy is a slowly contagious infectious disease caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium leprae.   

                   II.            This germ was discovered by Dr. A. Hanson in 1873.  Hence this disease is also called 'Hansen's disease'.   

                 III.            The leprosy drug 'Dapson' (D.D.S.) was made available in 1940 and its use started from 1943.

                 IV.            The Leprosy Control Program was started in India in 1954-55.   

                   V.            The 'Multiple Medications' (MDT) for leprosy was introduced in 1980. 

                 VI.            The National Leprosy Eradication Program was started in 1983.  - India alone accounts for 1/3 of the world's total leprosy.  

               VII.            In India, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, W.  It is more prevalent in Bengal, Bihar and Orissa. 

             VIII.            Less than one per ten thousand population means 'leprosy eradication'.  The spread of leprosy is due to close contact (as well as through the air). 

Symptoms of leprosy

(1) Deaf sores (not itchy, not painful)

(2) Thick, oily skin

(3) Painful nerves

(4) Skin germs detected 

(5) Diagnosis - Diagnosis is done by eye and germs are examined on the skin of the ear canal. 



Type of Leprosy

1.       Contagious (Multi Bacillary) Multi Bacillary (more than 6 scars / more than two painful veins) Medication lasts for 12 to 18 months. 

2.       Pauci Bacillary Z. 3 (1 to 5 scars a sore vein) Medication lasts for 6 to 9 months. 

3.       Preventive vaccine against leprosy is not available. 

4.       In the case of leprosy medication, multiple treatment methods are called MDT (Muli Drug Therapy). 

5.       Leprosy Prevention Day - "January 30" (Mahatma Gandhi celebrates his death anniversary as he worked for eradication.)

6.       Dr. Baba Amte's 'Anandvan' project in Maharashtra (in Vidarbha) does social work on leprosy.

7.       Leprosy No disease.
